Go-To Items for Weekend Walks

Weekend walks are a simple way to relax, get outside, and move your body, especially after a week indoors.

If you’re heading to the park, the woods, or a nearby coastal path is on your list this week, here are a few suggestions from our own packing list.

What You Should Pack for Your Dog

It’s best to pack a dog water bottle before heading out. Having one is useful for longer walks or warm days and makes it easy for your dog to drink while you’re on the move.

If you get one with a built-in bowl, you won’t have to carry a separate one or try to find a stream.

You should also take waste bags, a few treats, and a spare lead. If you’re near water or walking after rain, a small towel helps keep the car or house clean.

Comfortable Footwear and Light Layers

For shorter city walks, casual trainers might be enough. But for hillier routes or uneven paths, walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots offer more grip and support.

Going on a long walk without the correct footwear can cause foot pain and blisters, so it’s better to wear running shoes or hiking shoes.

Dress in light, breathable layers. The weather can shift quickly, so having something you can take off or put on easily helps. A packable waterproof jacket is one of those items you’ll be glad to have, even if it stays in the bag.

Bottled Water

It’s easy to forget about your own hydration when you’re focused on your dog or corralling any of your walking partners. Aluminum bottled water is great for walks; the bottles are light, easy to carry, and can be recycled after use.

Aluminum bottles also keep water cooler than plastic, too, which is a bonus on sunnier days. They don’t need cleaning when you get home, which is handy if you’re going out again straight away or have other plans after the walk.

Something to Sit On

If you plan to stop on a long walk to take in the sights, bring something to sit on. A small, foldable mat or a picnic blanket works well and can fit in most backpacks.

It keeps us dry if the ground is damp and gives us a reason to pause for a few minutes.

Use the time to drink water, have a snack, or just rest your legs. It’s also useful if you’re walking with someone who prefers a slower pace. A short break can make a big difference and means you’re not rushing to get home.

A Small Bag for Essentials

A compact backpack or crossbody bag holds everything without weighing you down. Inside, consider carrying these items:

  • Snacks or a sandwich (especially if you’re walking for over an hour)
  • Phone and portable charger
  • Keys, tissues, and hand sanitizer
  • Dog bits (mentioned above)
  • Sunglasses and suncream, if needed

Some of your walks end with a café stop or a spot on the grass for a snack, so having the basics in one place helps.

Walking with a dog is good for both of you; exercise can help support mental health, even if it’s just a short walk! Spending time outside with a dog can bring routine and a sense of calm.

A Simple Plan

Finally, always check the route before heading out. This might mean reviewing a trail map, checking the weather, or looking at public transport times. Even short walks are more enjoyable when you’re not worried about getting lost or stuck without a way back.

If you’re travelling further out for your walk, try to use sustainable modes of travel, like buses or bikes, to get to your starting point.

Weekend walks don’t have to be long or remote to be rewarding. With a few thoughtful items, almost any outdoor space becomes an easy escape from daily routines.
